Last week, Apple released a new kit of developer tools that will allow developers to start working on Apple Watch apps. But the new kit included a fun surprise: a new system font called San Francisco! It’s the first font Apple has designed in-house in almost 20 years. San Francisco seems inspired by Helvetica and FF Din, and it’s designed for smaller displays (plenty of space between each letter). It’s likely that Apple will bring San Francisco to iPhones and Macs soon. Steve Jobs named all of Apple’s typefaces after cities – Chicago, New York, Geneva, and Cairo.
While Apple primarily went with practicality over aesthetics, San Francisco is a nice alternative to the often-used Helvetica and other sans-serifs!
